What makes people successful? Contemporary education
and propaganda often attribute it to personal efforts, while in traditional
morality and religion, there is also the saying that individuals or their
ancestors do good deeds and accumulate virtue.
This makes sense, but objectively speaking, a person
can achieve a career, first of all, the background of the times, the big
environment and situation; secondly, the help of family, family background and
network resources; thirdly, personal talent and efforts; and indescribable
luck, like heaven's will, destiny, and divine help.
Overall, personal efforts account for a small
proportion.
As Jack Ma, the main founder of Alibaba, said at the
20th anniversary celebration of Alipay and Ant Group on December 8, "Every
era of ours has given each generation different opportunities and challenges,
and not everyone can grasp these opportunities and challenges."
Opportunities and challenges are two sides of the
same coin. If you can grasp opportunities, you can overcome challenges. The
opportunities of the times rise and fall like the tide, and people on the
sampan advance and retreat with the waves.
Times make heroes. Whether it is prosperity or
decline, there are always opportunities. What is tested is your choice of
track, and even the choice of stadiums.
In the past, China's real estate market had a bull
market for more than 20 years. Buying a house can make money in the vertical
comparison of time. The difference lies in the horizontal comparison. Where to
buy a house can make more money. This is the general environment and situation
of the background of the times, and it is the choice of track and stadiums.
In recent years, with the flow of prosperity,
Southeast Asia has benefited from the competition between China and the United
States. Singapore has entered the fast lane of development, and India's
prospects have become clearer.
While AI, blockchain and other industries are in the
ascendant, the disposal of non-performing assets in traditional industries is also
full of gold, which tests vision and strength.
The Tao Te Ching points out the law of the operation
of Tao: "The great is passing away, passing away and returning far
away", one cycle after another, the sun is new every day.
And "Zhuangzi" said: Tao is everywhere,
Tao is in shit and urine. The law of the operation of Tao is also the
commonality of all things.
As for the rise and fall of the industry, at the
beginning of a cycle, it is at a low point, with low thresholds, less
competition, more opportunities, and greater room for development. When it
reaches the high point, you should arbitrage and exit, and don't wait until
things run in the opposite direction at the highest point before exiting.
People who believe in Taoism attach importance to
following the trend and remain humble in front of nature. When encountering a
storm, the ship should return to the harbor, and don't go out to sea to be a
hero, nor should you be self-intoxicated with "the world is turbid and I
am the only one who is clear" when you see the situation is very good.
Confucius saw the collapse of traditional
civilization and the loss of order in the country. He knew that he could not
reverse the situation, but he still insisted on doing it, showing the greatness
of his personality. Lao Tzu saw that the Zhou Dynasty was so weak and
dilapidated that he did not make unnecessary sacrifices, but lived his life
well. He wrote scriptures to pass on to future generations, waiting for the
opportunity. This is a kind of wisdom. Two personalities and two life paths are
neither right nor wrong, each has its own value, which varies from person to
person.
Taoists pay more attention to "what is
reality", that is, objective laws and objective conditions, tend to be
calm, rational and pragmatic, invest less in "what should be", and
try not to act rashly based on man-made good and evil, right and wrong, likes
and dislikes.
This does not mean that individuals are not
important. The general trend of the times cannot be changed by ordinary people.
There are indeed individual heroes who create the times, but the probability is
too small and the change is limited. As for the background of birth, it is not
something you can choose.
What each of us can do is to respect the way of
heaven, observe and grasp the opportunities of the times, develop personal
connections, and maximize our potential in the fields we like.
So the most important thing is to realize and
practice the Tao by yourself, and climb to the peak of your life in the
experience of the Tao.
